About Us

Accounting Day began in 1972 as a live, in person, annual educational event usually held in May of each year. It grew into a large event with attendees from all areas of accounting, significant student involvement and great opportunities for sponsors. Beginning in about 2004 the date of the event moved to the 2nd or 3rd Monday of May. Why these days? With increased attendance, more and more attendees had conflicts with month-end close, tax or audit deadlines and these two weeks seemed to work best with the month-end Memorial Day Holiday that follows.

We found that Mondays worked best as the hotel tended to get booked through the end of the week beginning early in the week. Many websites began tracking us; we suppose the name Accounting Day sounded like a National Day to be celebrated. But since the event was always on a Monday it was hard to pin down “Accounting Day” on the same day each year. The more internet attention that was directed towards Accounting Day the more different dates were attached to “National Accounting Day”. We also found that we were “National Accounting Day”.

As this narrative continued to grow we found that May 19 seemed to be the most prominent “National Accounting Day”. (Remember, the Monday concept). Review the rest of this website for more on National Accounting Day and how this 49 year old event has given rise to a great awareness to the profession of accounting. While “National Accounting Day” is now officially on May 19 each year, it’s celebrated once or twice a year by having a live Accounting Day event in May and October every year.
